After an Airbender and a Waterbender have already been the protagonists of the Avatar-series, now an Earthbender is next. The creators of the series promise a completely new experience.
What is known about the new series? The new Avatar series is a direct sequel to The Legend of Korra
and is titled Avatar: Seven Havens
. The series is set to conclude within two seasons, each containing 13 episodes. It is not yet confirmed when the series will premiere. It is suspected that the new Avatar series will launch in 2027.
- The world of the Avatar was destroyed by a devastating cataclysm. Both the physical and spiritual worlds were torn apart.
- The remaining survivors of humanity gather in the eponymous Seven Havens (in German: Sieben Häfen), which are scattered across the world.
- This time we follow the adventures of a young Earthbender named Pavi, who discovers that she is the new Avatar after Korra. However, she lives in a time when the Avatar is feared as the destroyer of humanity rather than revered as a savior.
Bryan Konietzko is one of the two creators of the series. He revealed where the inspiration for the upcoming series comes from and why everything is supposed to be different with the new Avatar.
Avatar and the Connection to Animes
What should be different? As Konietzko reports on X, they were inspired by animes from the 90s. Well-known animes like Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, or Neon Genesis Evangelion emerge from this time. They stand out particularly for their vibrant colors and have only scattered CGI effects.
The first teaser image for the new Avatar series also clearly shows that bright colors are used. The yellow desert city stands out against the blue sky, in which a colorful play of colors can be seen (via Reddit).
Another source of inspiration is the French artist and cartoonist Jean Giraud, who is known by his pseudonym Moebius. He also played with colorful contrasts. The series is supposed to include more fantasy elements than the two predecessor series.
Some fans on Reddit also found that the new Avatar series reminds them of The Legend of Vox Machina. This is an animated series based on the first campaign of the Dungeons-and-Dragons web series Critical Role. Both the visuals and the premise are said to remind fans of the DnD adventures.
What remains the same? One detail that remains the same is the young protagonist. Once again, a child discovers that it is the new Avatar. User varnums1666 writes that he is disappointed that the protagonist is once again so young. He had hoped that this time they would continue with an adult.
However, other users point out that the target audience is still young children. Yet some others believe that many fans who followed the series during Aang and Korra’s time are now grown up.
Avatar: The Last Airbender only received a live-action series last year. Unfortunately, the series did not go down well with fans of the cartoon original. Despite all the criticism, more material of the live series is to come: Netflix is providing Avatar: The Last Airbender with 2 new seasons at once, despite major fan criticism
