Surprisingly, the new action-adventure Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was presented at E3 2021 during the Ubisoft Forward event. The trailer for Avatar was well received by many players, especially visually. Now there is heated discussion about whether the game will actually look that good in the end or not.
What is the new Avatar game all about? As the highlight of its Ubi Forward Show, Ubisoft pulled a surprise out of the hat at the end of the event and showed for the first time the new game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
The Avatar game has been in development by the studio Massive Entertainment since 2017, but until now, little was known about the project. Now, while we know a bit more, there weren’t many new details, but Ubisoft finally showed the first moving images of the game in the form of a trailer.
The new Avatar game will be a first-person action-adventure where players will meet new characters and explore previously unknown areas of Pandora. The release is planned for 2022.
Taste of the finished game or just a pretty trailer?
What many are currently concerned about: The trailer was quite well received, having already garnered over 20,000 upvotes on YouTube the day after the presentation and just over 800 downvotes. Many YouTube users express their enthusiasm in the comments, especially praising the graphical quality of the trailer. However, this aspect is being intensely debated.
- On one hand, many players hope that this trailer could be representative of the graphics in the game, as the trailer really looks good.
- On the other hand, there are also plenty of comments saying: This won’t stay the same in the finished game.

Why this could be a preview: What gives many hope: The trailer showed the first moving images – and in the Snowdrop Engine, which is also used in The Division. Officially, the content shown was referred to as game footage – according to a caption at the beginning of the video. And for that, it looks truly fantastic.
What also makes some hopeful: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will only be released for PC, next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as Stadia and Luna. The game will not be released for the old console generation. Many see this as a very good sign.
Since the old hardware of PS4 and Xbox One could not even approximately handle the graphics in the trailer, this is practically ruled out. Thus, the concern that the old consoles could have a negative impact on the development of the game is eliminated.
Why players doubt it: However, there are also players who doubt that the finished game will offer the same quality as the footage from the trailer.
The consensus: It looks just too good.
Hardly any PC game currently looks as good as the trailer for Avatar; on consoles (even on next-gen), it certainly won’t look like that. Furthermore, it gives the impression that it is a rendered video in the Snowdrop Engine, hence not really representative of the final look in the game.
Moreover, some emphasize: Ubisoft is known for graphical downgrades; the finished game often looks quite a bit worse than what was presented initially. There have already been some negative examples, with The Division being cited as a prominent downgrade example. Some are convinced that it will be the same with Avatar, urging to temper expectations or at least wait for further in-game material.
