The North American Pokémon International Championships (NAIC) 2024 is currently taking place. A scandal has erupted, prompting calls for punishment for one Pokémon player.
What is the NAIC? The North American Pokémon International Championships (NAIC) is the third and final International Championship of the 2024 season. Here, Championship Points can be earned to qualify for an invitation to the World Championships.
Earlier this year, similar events took place in other parts of the world, for example, in London in April.
The NAIC features competitions for the games Pokémon UNITE, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon GO, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. A scandal has now emerged in the card game, where even expulsion and banning of a player is being demanded.
Insult or misunderstanding?
What happened? After a match in the Pokémon Trading Card Game between player Andrea Zorat and his opponent ended in a draw, Zorat accused the player of having forced the draw, among other things, by playing slowly.
He allegedly told the player in front of one of the judges and other players: You get what you deserve, loser
. This was reported by a teammate of the player on X.com.
Judges mediate the situation, but do not punish the player
Subsequently, the judge took the two to a safe area and attended to the player to ensure she was feeling better. A higher-ranking judge was called in, and the situation was discussed for a long time. Additionally, the player was given iced tea and water.
Afterward, the player was able to start the next round, 15 minutes late. After the round, the higher-ranking judge approached the player again and informed her that Zorat would not receive a penalty but would be monitored by security until the end of the tournament.
Player believes he comes across as aggressive because of his Italian accent
The judges spoke with Zorat, who expressed remorse and conveyed his regret. He also justified his behavior by stating that he is Italian
and has an aggressive accent

However, the player does not find this sufficient. She stated: It’s crazy to get away with such a disgraceful outburst without punishment
.
Even the teammate of the player who reported on the case finds this inadequate: I hope this is quickly addressed with an immediate ban from the competition.
What does Zorat say about this? Zorat himself also commented on the incident afterward. He stated that it was never his intention to hurt the player. Furthermore, he indicated that the insult attributed to him is not accurately represented.
Zorat expressed himself on X.com as follows: [I] only said that [she] deserves to lose the game
. Additionally, after the judges told him how much his behavior had hurt the player, he wanted to apologize directly, but the player did not want that.
Whether or not there will be a punishment for the player remains to be seen. Ultimately, only the player and Zorat know what really happened on site.
