A fridge is present in almost every apartment. But besides Skyrim, there will soon be advertisements in the kitchen as well. At least, that’s what Samsung hopes. The catch is: The fridges that will display advertisements are not budget models.
With the decision to display advertisements on certain fridges, Samsung is likely to receive a mixed reception from many people.
First Skyrim, now advertisements on the fridge
What has Samsung announced? Samsung has confirmed that its Family Hub fridges in the USA will display advertisements following a recent software update. It is not known when the update will come to Europe and thus to Germany. Privacy regulations here are significantly stricter than in the USA.
The new advertisement has been reported by the English-language magazine Dexerto.com. The update for the fridges is part of a pilot program for ‘advertising promotions and curated ads’ on specific ‘Family Hub’ fridge models.
The company added that the advertisements cannot be completely disabled, although users can close individual ads. While it is possible to turn off the internet on the fridges to get rid of the ads, one would also have to forgo smart features of the fridge.
What does this all have to do with Skyrim? Bethesda jokingly announced at E3 back then that in the future, one could also play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on certain fridges. And not only that, they also presented a version for Alexa.
At the E3 back then (2018), one could watch a humorous trailer (via YouTube.com) featuring Keegan-Michael Key. Keegan-Michael Key is a well-known comedian and actor in the USA. With the trailer and the presentation, they responded to the fans’ criticism at that time, who criticized that Bethesda seemed to be re-releasing Skyrim on every platform to sell the game again.
