The PC is receiving a new update for ARK: Survival Evolved. Patch v258 brings new dinos to the survival MMO and is expected to be released at the end of May. We have an overview of the new content for you.
Ark Survival Evolved is getting new creatures with the new PC patch v258. Among them is the warlord “Yutyrannus”, whose dossier was only recently added. Additionally, the survival MMO is expected to receive some technical optimizations with the update.
Ark Survival Evolved: Patch v258 – ETA May 30 for PC
Studio Wildcard announced the new patch v258 for May 30. This is an estimated time of arrival. The update may be postponed. It is still unknown when the patch will be available on PS4 and Xbox One.
These are the new dinos in Ark: Hyaenodon, Hesperornis, Megatherium, Megalania, Yutyrannus

Hyaenodon – The Perfect Hunting Dog
The Hyaenodon belongs to the mammals and is a carnivore. These creatures often travel in groups and are considered exceptionally intelligent. The Hyaenodon avoids combat and prefers injured or dead animals as prey. Before attacking, the Hyaenodon carefully considers whether the fight is worth a possible injury. The prey must be particularly suitable for that. Hyaenodon can be tamed but cannot be ridden. They are easy to train and are used as hunting dogs when tamed.
Hesperornis – Farming Oil with the Eggs of the Prehistoric Duck
This is a mix of duck and dino. On land, the Hesperornis moves awkwardly, but in water, it is an excellent fish hunter. The Hesperornis is tamed neither suitable for hunting, nor does it form a special bond with survivors. This duck is mainly tamed for its eggs. When the eggs are prepared correctly, survivors can divide them into two substances. One contains a lot of protein and is particularly nutritious. The other substance is comparable to the oil that comes from the ocean.
Megatherium – The Giant Sloth Farms Chitin
A gigantic sloth, paired with elephant and bear – that is the Megatherium. It is difficult to knock this mammal unconscious, as it is so huge. The Megatherium is extremely useful when tamed for farming chitin. The sloth is actually an omnivore but particularly favors insects. When it eats insects, the Megatherium leaves the shells of the animals intact, allowing survivors to collect valuable chitin.
Megalania – Climbing Cliffs Made Easy
The Megalania is a huge lizard that lives in the cave systems of the island. Although the Megalania can grow up to 3 meters long, it can easily climb cave walls. Its strong claws help in this. That is why the Megalania is a popular pet among survivors. Tamed, the giant lizards can be ridden and transport survivors quickly through caves. The Megalania is a carnivore and poisons its prey.
Yutyrannus – The Warlord on the Battlefield
Its roar instills fear in all creatures and enemies. The Yutyrannus is highly aggressive and a must-have for survivors on the battlefield. It seems to have a special ability that makes it the general of a dino army. With training, the roar of the Yutyrannus becomes the battle cry that gives allied dinos courage.
Ark: Optimizations Through Update v258 – Soon Better Performance?
The new patch also promises a few technical optimizations. These could improve the performance of the dino MMO. These are the optimizations:
- Memory reduction
- Texture memory and mesh optimization
- Performance improvements through GPU and CPU load
- Threading improvements
Furthermore, a few bugs are expected to be fixed with this patch. Which ones remain unknown.
