Apex Legends is currently threatening players with bans if they exploit a bug with strange rocks in a new mode. Previously, some players had been kicked from the game – but without obvious wrongdoing.
What are bans for now? In the new Season 9 of Apex Legends, there were some problems and bugs with the update. One of these problems involved rocks on a new map called Phase Runner.
Phase Runner is one of the maps for the new 3vs3 arena mode in Apex Legends. Here, there are rocks that players could glitch into. This allowed them to shoot outside, but not get hit themselves. The glitch quickly became known as “ghost rocks”.
The issue was supposed to be fixed with a hotfix, which, however, was delayed a bit. By now, the glitch should no longer work, but there was a warning from Respawn beforehand anyway.
In a tweet about the fix, it says (via Twitter): “Exploiting this exploit is grounds for a ban!” Glitches and exploits happen more often in shooters, but it’s rare for developers to take direct action with bans.

What other reasons are there for bans? Just before the ghost rock glitch, numerous players reported that they had been banned without obvious wrongdoing. They were just pinging weapons, climbing a tower, just being in the menu, or not even logged into the game when they received a ban (via dotesports).
EA confirmed that this was a mistake and players had not been banned intentionally (via Twitter). Apparently, a lot of innocents were affected. However, it was not revealed where the mistake lay.
The problem should have been fixed by now anyway. If you are still affected by an unjustified ban, it’s best to contact support directly (via EA Help).
Is Season 9 worth it? In the new Season 9 of Apex Legends, there are not only new bugs. There are also many new contents that have come to the game:
- the new legend Valkyrie with a jetpack and rockets
- the Bocek bow, a powerful weapon that has already been nerfed
- Arena, a new mode where only two teams compete for victory
