MeinMMO editor Marie Friske looked at the Netflix anime ‘My Happy Marriage’ with skepticism at first. But when she gave the popular series a chance, she quickly became captivated by the love story and felt for the characters.
My Happy Marriage or My Happy Marriage – just the title alone kept me from giving the anime on Netflix a chance.
It sounded too much like pink romantic glasses and cheesy declarations of love – something I can’t relate to at all.
And yet I watched the first episode without great expectations… then the second, the third, and before I knew it, I binged the rest of the series.

A Touching Story with Lovable Characters and a Touch of Mystery
What is My Happy Marriage about? The anime takes place in an alternate Japan in the 19th century, where some people possess supernatural powers and monsters (called Grotesqueries) make the area unsafe.
Miyo grows up in the household of the influential Saimori family, but due to her lack of supernatural gifts, she is treated more like a maid than a daughter.
One day, Miyo is promised as the fiancée to Lord Kiyoka Kudo by her father. He is a commander of the ‘Special Anti-Grotesquerie Unit’, known for his cruelty and has scared off any potential wife.
What makes the anime so good for me? The two main characters, Miyo and Kiyoka Kudo, quickly grow on me.
Both the reserved and unsure young woman Miyo, who has endured mistreatment by her family all her life, and Lord Kudo, who is introduced at the beginning of the story as a distant and harsh character: Both develop in beautiful ways and learn slowly how to interact with each other.
It is not grand, cheesy gestures and massive declarations of love that characterize the story, but small and cautious attempts at approaching each other that warm my heart.
Because the characters are so sympathetic, their story moves me so much that I feel deeply invested.
I would love to throw my laptop against the wall when Miyo’s family treats her disrespectfully or I watch with watery eyes and a big ‘Aww’ on my lips as the main characters hug for the first time.
As a fan of fantasy animes like Black Butler and Seraph of the End, I particularly enjoy the fantastic mystery elements that complement the love story. For me, that is the little cherry on top that makes the series perfect.
My Conclusion: Even though I was initially put off by the title, it turns out: My Happy Marriage is not a cheesy story at all, but an exciting anime with beautiful character developments and relationships, as well as intriguing mystery elements.
And yes, it is also a love story, but a damn good one!
