3. The story arc of Waver and Rider is something very special

Who is the story arc about? Among all the tragic fates in Fate/Zero, there is a story that touches the heart in a very special way: the relationship between Waver Velvet and Rider (Iskandar, the king of Macedonia – also known as Alexander the Great).
Waver is initially an insecure, shy young magician who feels overlooked and underestimated by the arrogant magician society. To prove himself and others that he can be “great”, he participates in the Grail War. Rider, whom he summons, is the exact opposite: loud, self-confident, full of life and charisma. He becomes almost like a father figure to Waver and encourages him to believe in himself.
Waver’s development from a shy boy to someone who stands up for his ideals is one of the most beautiful character developments in the entire series.
Why is this story arc so special? Fate/Zero is unusually serious and mature anime. Most characters are not teenagers but experienced, often disillusioned adults with complex motivations and traumatic pasts. It’s about power, manipulation, death, and the failure of great dreams.
Waver Velvet is the only truly young participant in the Grail War – a student who has little experience but wants to prove that someone like him can make a difference in this world. Just because he is the only “young” one in the midst of this dark elite, his relationship with Rider becomes all the more touching.
