1. A villain who is a match for the main character

Who is Kotomine Kirei? Kotomine Kirei is officially a priest of the church that is supposed to act as a neutral authority monitoring the Holy Grail War — but Kirei has his own interests. Instead of “normal” happiness, he feels alive only through the suffering of others. This frightens him himself – and he struggles for a long time to understand it.
Kirei initially summons the Servant Assassin (Hassan-i-Sabbah), but over the course of the story, his connection to Archer (Gilgamesh) becomes increasingly significant. Through conversations with Gilgamesh, Kirei ultimately realizes what really drives him at his core – and finally sheds his moral inhibitions.
What is his connection to Kiritsugu? Over the course of Fate/Zero, Kirei becomes Kiritsugu’s greatest adversary. From the beginning, the two are figures that resemble each other in many ways, yet are positioned against each other.
Both struggle with inner emptiness, moral questions, and the purpose of their actions. Both walk over corpses, but from different motives. Kirei realizes that his path is the exact opposite of Kiritsugu’s idealism: where Kiritsugu wants to save the world, Kirei wants to question it and destroy it.
