Quentin Tarantino loves movies – that’s no secret. However, a particular film featuring Jackie Chan fascinates him so much that he praises it to this day. A character from Kill Bill was even inspired by it.
Quentin Tarantino has a vast knowledge when it comes to movies. Since his youth in the 1970s, he watches countless films every year and, of course, has found his favorites over the years.
One of them is Police Story 3: Supercop from 1992. Yes, you read that right. The third part of a comedic action series, in which none other than Jackie Chan plays the titular Supercop Chan. Together with Inspector Yang, a colleague portrayed by Michelle Yeoh, they hunt down a drug lord.
The film particularly stands out due to great action sequences and stunts, and that’s exactly what Tarantino can get excited about.
The Masterclass of Stunts
What does Tarantino love about the film? In 2009, the director revealed which films are his favorites; you can watch the entire video on YouTube. Among the 20 films mentioned is also Police Story 3.
Tarantino praises the film to the skies and especially highlights the action scenes with the spectacular stunts. No wonder, Jackie Chan is famous for performing many of his stunts himself – which has led to numerous, sometimes serious injuries over the decades – a dedicated website shows what the man has already broken.
About the stunts in Police Story 3, Tarantino says:
“A film that contains the greatest stunts ever filmed. And that includes Buster Keaton.”
Quentin Tarantino
For clarification: Buster Keaton was a legendary filmmaker who particularly worked in the 1920s and directed numerous humorous films, including classics like The General or The Cameraman. He also performed his daring stunts himself and is still considered the masterclass in this discipline. You can find an impression of his work on YouTube.
Tarantino further emphasizes that he particularly loves a scene in Police Story 3 where Michelle Yeoh jumps onto a moving train with a motorcycle (you can find a clip of it on YouTube). She and the film as a whole later also served as inspiration for one of Tarantino’s most famous films: Kill Bill. Another Japanese film served as a template, but hardly anyone knows it here.
The character of the Bride in Kill Bill is an homage to Michelle Yeoh in her role as a tough action heroine with martial arts talent, but there is a valid reason why she didn’t play the role herself. In the West, she became increasingly well-known and now stars in Hollywood films like Wicked or Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The interesting thing about Tarantino’s taste in films is that he often has controversial opinions and praises films that not everyone is aware of. In contrast, he often takes a critical stance on blockbusters. All the more surprising was it when he praised a certain Superman film: A superhero film is so good that Quentin Tarantino loves it, even though he doesn’t like this genre.
