Although an action game had a really good year in 2024, the developer is ending support for the PS4. The reason doesn’t make sense to many players though.
What game are we talking about? We are referring to Genshin Impact by the Chinese developer miHoYo. It is one of the most successful video games of recent years and was able to generate significant profits in 2024:
- Last year, the game made 710 million dollars in revenue – which is about 609 million euros (according to businessofapps.com)
- In 2024, the game also had around 9.3 million active players and was installed 34 million times
Nevertheless, the developer miHoYo has decided to discontinue support for the PS4 version.
Starting from September 10, 2025, you will no longer be able to download Genshin Impact for the PS4 if you haven’t obtained it before. From February 25, all purchasable additional content will be removed. On April 8, 2026, the PS4 version will be permanently discontinued.
Developers leave the PS4 behind, players mourn
Why was this decision made? The developers explain the reason for the end on the PS4 in a blog article on www.hoyolab.com. It states:
Due to limitations related to hardware performance and platform application size, we will be discontinuing support and updates for Genshin Impact on PS4 in future versions.
This will not affect the PS5 version, it continues. There, the game will continue to be supported and updated.
How are players reacting? Players are discussing this decision, including in the largest subreddit for the game. For many players who only play Genshin Impact on the PS4, this is a heavy blow.
- A user named perfectchaos83 writes on Reddit: “Damn. Didn’t expect that.”
- Reddit user BuilderAura replies: “yeah me neither… I exclusively play on PS4 so now I’m wondering wtf I’m gonna do….”
- Another user laments that Genshin Impact will probably never be ported to the Switch as announced (on Reddit).
However, many are also questioning why the PS4 should be the limiting factor – after all, the game also runs on smartphones. These are generally weaker than a console when it comes to gaming.
- Under the official post by the developers, a user named nohsara writes: “I have a ps5 so i wont personally be affected, but I dont understand why hoyo cant continue optimizing for ps4 if they can optimize for MOBILE.”
- “So it can run on budget mobiles smoothly but cannot on a ps4???? lol,” writes tushonkin
