The Amazon MMORPG New World is suddenly back among the best-selling games on Steam, and a free expansion is the reason for this.
Which MMORPG is it about? New World is Amazon’s first MMORPG and was released in September 2021. The MMORPG started strong back then, with over 900,000 players and hours-long queues. Over the years, the MMORPG fell further and further, partly because the important release of the expansion “Aeternum” coincided with the launch of its in-house competitor Throne and Liberty.
In 2025, the MMORPG quietly ran with around 8,000 to 12,000 players on Steam (via SteamDB). Now, however, the MMORPG is suddenly back among the bestsellers and has gained 5,000 new players.

Comeback for New World
Why is the MMORPG making a comeback now? Looking at the peak player numbers for New World, there has been a noticeable upward trend since October 2024. While more and more players have rediscovered the MMORPG since June, there was a significant jump of over 5,000 players in the last two weeks.
The MMORPG can also be found among the bestsellers on Steam in Germany. Here it ranks 37th and is back in the top 100 for the first time.
This is likely related to the new season “Nighthaven.” It has turned out to be a major content update that promises not just some cosmetics but a lot of new content and even aims to raise the maximum level to 70. It will be available for free to all owners of the MMORPG starting October 13.
Players on Reddit also explain that they are hopeful for the release of “Nighthaven” and are starting the game again for that reason.
What does Nighthaven bring? The new season brings, fitting for Halloween, the new area Nighthaven, filled with werewolves, vampires, and other dark creatures. The new area offers not only new quests but also the new raid Nachtinsel, designed for 10 players.
New are also the random dungeons, which are generated for a group of up to 3 players and offer monsters and bosses to defeat. For the defeated enemies, you collect power-ups, cursed resources, and currency that you have to bring out of the respective dungeon before time runs out. With each defeated boss, the difficulty increases, but so does the quality of the loot.
In addition to the content, there is a lot of change regarding equipment and sets in the game. Equipment pieces are expected to provide more gameplay-changing effects in the future rather than just increasing stats.
Behind the extensive new season 10 of New World is already the new head of New World.
