Place 2: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
In second place is the third Indy film, which concluded the first trilogy. Here, Dr. Jones embarks on a great adventure together with his father, played by Sean Connery. In pursuit of the Holy Grail, the two confront the Nazis.
The film is reminiscent of the light-heartedness of the first part. There is a lot of humor and the story is less dark than in its predecessor. The highlight is clearly the dynamic between Indy and his father, who likes to call him “Junior”.
The cinematic execution of the story is, typical of Spielberg, perfectly done. The dialogues and one-liners also hit the mark, resulting in a very good overall package. The Last Crusade would have made it to the top of this ranking if it weren’t for another film in the series.
Place 1: Raiders of the Lost Ark
The first film is also the best. What is the reason for this? It was a breath of fresh air in the action cinema of the time. Instead of a superhero or muscle-bound strongman saving the world, it was about occult treasures. In the first part, Indy sets out in search of the Ark of the Covenant. The protagonist’s dry humor met perfectly staged action and good timing.
Everything that became customary in later films was still new and fresh here. The opening sequence in the Peruvian jungle alone has become iconic – we only mention rolling stone. Particularly cool: In the video game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”, one can replay the aforementioned scene.
Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced and popularized the character of Indiana Jones. Other popular characters like Indy’s love interest Marion also come from the first film – as does the catchy music by composer John Williams. For all these reasons, this film rightly deserves the top spot.
