4. Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Release: 1983
Episode 6 is not as good as the other parts of the trilogy as a finale, but the battle on Endor is always watchable. Seeing the technologically advanced stormtroopers lose to the native Ewoks will never get old.
Also, the final showdown between Darth Vader and Luke, who has his coolest design here, is satisfying and a nice conclusion to a fantastic saga.
3. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
Release: 1977
The start of the series is still one of its best parts. A New Hope shows the seemingly impossible fight against the mighty Empire. Luke is perfectly portrayed by Mark Hamill, and combined with Han, creates an entertaining duo.
The space battles in A New Hope look great to this day and live up to the film’s title. It is the beginning of a new hope against the Empire.
2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Release: 2016
Rogue One was a huge surprise. Away from Jedi and any prophecies, the film shows a smaller resistance against the Empire. Like in a Kurosawa film, a team is assembled to be sent on a suicide mission.
The film has beautiful visuals that are different from anything seen before in Star Wars. The protagonists are a pleasant change, and to this day, I get goosebumps from the last scene in the film. Rogue One is the best modern Star Wars film.
1. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
Release: 1980
With The Empire Strikes Back, Irvin Keshner made the best Star Wars film of all time. There are great visuals in various locations with a set design that makes all places feel alive. The battles on Hoth are great, and overall, the film manages to create a wonderful mix of different atmospheres.
Furthermore, the film features one of the most legendary moments in film history. The battle between Luke and Darth Vader is not only thrilling, but also reveals a plot twist that has become ingrained in pop culture. The Empire Strikes Back has everything a fan of the series could wish for in a film.
