8. Star Wars: Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
Release: 2002
The positive aspect of Attack of the Clones is definitely Obi-Wan. His detective story surrounding the clones and Jango Fett is really fun, and the planet Kamino is a truly interesting planet with great design.
Unfortunately, the film falls flat in all scenes with Anakin and Padme. The romantic dialogue between the two goes on for much too long, and they have little palpable chemistry, making their relationship never tangible.
7. Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Release: 1999
The coolest character in Episode 1 is clearly Darth Maul. The Sith has arguably the coolest prequel design, and as a villain, he works well here. The fact that most of the setting is on Tatooine makes the story feel quite grounded, which is a nice change for the franchise.
Unfortunately, Jar Jar Binks greatly harms the film and Qui-Gon Jinn’s decisions regarding Anakin seem somewhat illogical. Some scenes feel dragged out, causing the grounded film to often become tedious.
6. Solo: A Star Wars Story
Release: 2018
Solo doesn’t do anything really wrong. It’s a fun adventure film that works quite well as a standalone film. The actors do their job well, especially Donald Glover, who was simply perfectly cast as young Lando.
Aside from Glover, the film is relatively inconsequential. Much of it will be quickly forgotten, but it certainly makes for an entertaining evening.
5. Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith
Release: 2005
After the rather mediocre Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith tells Anakin’s story really well. His temptation by evil and fall into his emotions is credibly portrayed, and the downfall of the Republic is an exciting event.
This film also has the best fights of the prequels, even if some CGI effects have not aged well. The confrontation between Obi-Wan and Anakin remains an impressive duel to this day.
