Rank 2: The Batman
After the Nolan films, the new Batman with Robert Pattinson in the title role was a breath of fresh air. Gotham here, similar to Batman Begins, is continuously wet and uncomfortable. The hero himself is more of an antihero and can finally live out his destiny as a detective.
The locations, costumes, the dense atmosphere, and the memorable soundtrack come together seamlessly. Paul Dano gives a better and entirely different Riddler than Jim Carrey did. No Batman film before looked better. By now, there is even a spin-off series about the Penguin.
Rank 1: The Dark Knight
The second part of Nolan’s trilogy is highly regarded by most fans. And rightly so: Although the film is less comic and more a realistic thriller, it reminds in some moments of works like Heat. But it offers with Heath Ledger as the Joker one of the most iconic portrayals of the character. Many lines from the film are still quoted today – “Why so serious” is just one of them.
Other well-known characters like Two-Face also have their deserved appearance. Batman himself is once again played by Christian Bale. He provides a thoughtful but also driven Bruce Wayne and Batman. Even those who can only relate to the character a little should at least watch The Dark Knight for the Joker. The film is grippingly staged and is both gripping and entertaining.
