Rank 11: Batman: The Killing Joke
The first animated film on this list is the adaptation of a famous graphic novel by Alan Moore. As the title suggests, it is mainly about the Joker. Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl also plays a role, and we learn how she is injured by the Joker. The fact that she seems to primarily define herself through Batman feels strange.
In between, the film tries to explain the great antagonist, which rarely leads to a satisfactory result. The Joker is always best when he remains inexplicable.
Rank 10: Batman & Robin
This film by Joel Schumacher is often regarded as one of the worst Batman films. And yes, similar to Batman Forever, the direct predecessor, this is a colorful fever dream. George Clooney plays Batman in the iconic costume (nipple, clears throat …), Arnold Schwarzenegger appears as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.
Compared to Forever, this film is much more fun. The trash factor is higher and provides entertainment. The chaos that this movie is gives a fun movie night. But it is not enough for a good Batman film.
Rank 9: Batman: The Movie
Similar to Batman & Robin, this film from 1966 stands out mainly due to its incomparable charm. It takes the television series from that time and makes a movie out of it. As Batman, Adam West is once again seen, facing off against Cesar Romero as the Joker. How he fares in our ranking of the best Joker actors can be found here.
The film does not take itself seriously and still entertains today with its somewhat cheap-looking production. It is a product of its time and far removed from the dark tone of more recent Batman films.
