11. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
Release: 2022
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has a significant problem: it tries to tell too much, which makes the fundamental idea from the first part fade away. Many of the personal stories feel inorganic, and overall the film feels like a prequel to Dumbledore, who is not the protagonist.
The film also has good aspects: Mads Mikkelsen as the calm Grindelwald with a threatening presence was very pleasing to me, and his relationship with Dumbledore could have made for an interesting story. Nevertheless, it is the worst film in the Harry Potter universe.
10. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Release: 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald falls into similar traps as the third part, but the ideas work better here. The threat from Grindelwald’s people to ordinary people feels more tangible, and Newt appears here less like a side character with too much screen time.
Unlike in the third part, Queenie’s development seems more credible here.
9. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Release: 2016
The first part of the Fantastic Beasts series is also the best, as the titular creatures get ample screen time here. The first film is the only one in the trilogy that manages to exude a certain magic.
Getting to know the beasts is the highlight of the film and works best. The jokes are fun, Newt is sympathetic in his unusual way, and especially with Jacob, he makes a refreshing combination.
