Horror fans have reason to rejoice: In just under two weeks, a new Alien-series will start, sending the well-known monster to our Earth. Just the production budget shows: The ambitions are high.
What kind of series is this? Alien: Earth is an upcoming series from the Alien franchise. It started in 1979 when Ridley Scott directed the first part. Since then, a total of 4 films from the main series have followed, along with two prequels, two crossovers, and a spin-off in the form of Alien Romulus, which was released last year. Additionally, there are several short films, a web series, and a series of video games.
Alien: Earth is supervised by showrunner Noah Hawley, who was already responsible for series like Fargo for the producing studio FX. For his new project, he has taken on a well-known franchise, with which much has already been experimented – sometimes more, sometimes less successful.
However, Hawley gives his series a somewhat different, new touch. This primarily refers to the scenario that brings the terror from space into our familiar world.
The Xenomorph crashes on Earth
What is the series about? The central event of the plot is the crash of a spaceship on Earth. A group of soldiers is tasked with investigating the wreckage, including the young woman Wendy, whose consciousness was recently transferred into a synthetic body.
Quickly, the search team realizes that not everything on board the spaceship is as it should be. Several alien forms are present – including the well-known Xenomorph, for which we have a special feature for you on MeinMMO.
The first trailer already shows that the series relies heavily on atmospheric horror. At the same time, we as the audience know the scenario, which makes it all the more frightening. The Alien itself has lost none of its horror after all these years. It will be interesting to see where the story develops over the course of the 8 episodes – and whether a second season will follow.
However, the studio FX seems to have high demands. According to a report from Variety, they even have ambitions to become the next big series phenomenon – similar to Game of Thrones a few years ago.
Where does the comparison come from? On the one hand, there is the enormous budget of the series. With around 216 million euros, the eight episodes cost as much as modern blockbusters. A studio investing that much money into a project has high expectations.
On the other hand, the series features some popular actors like Timothy Olyphant. And the name “Alien” is widely recognized and may attract numerous viewers out of curiosity.
After all, the first images of the trailer are already convincing. On YouTube, there are many comments from users expressing their anticipation. A user named mwm1137 writes, “This series looks so much more high-quality than I expected, it looks great.”
The user Lukes_123 goes into more detail: “I am really excited that it’s not just about the Xenomorph. And about the human-cyborg hybrid. You can really tell they want to develop something new and not just repeat the same six iconic scenes from the first film like they usually do.”
Whether the series will manage to become a topic of conversation in the long term and generate similar hype to Game of Thrones is, of course, still unclear.
