You heard right, you have to pay in-game money to invite your friends. With the Gold you earn, you buy Trial Keys. Each key costs you 1,000 gold coins. You then pass this key to a friend who can play for free for seven days.
If the player stays, you get your paid Gold back
However, you will also receive rewards for recommending the game to a friend. If your buddy stays and buys a starter pack, you will not only get back the 1,000 gold coins, but also an additional 4,000 gold. In addition, there are many other rewards, which change regularly.
The more friends you give a trial key to, the more rewards you get, and the more of your friends buy a starter pack, the richer you will become in the game.
Player numbers are slowly stabilizing
The number of players in Albion Online is currently declining, as can be read in the official forum. This is not surprising. Like every online game, the number of players is very high at the beginning because many want to try the title. Afterwards, it decreases to stabilize at an average.
According to the developers, there are currently around 2,000 players active at the same time, a number that the team is satisfied with, but which also has room for improvement. Perhaps the “Invite a Friend Program” will bring more players to the fantasy world.
