With Rebel Moon 2: The Scargiver, Netflix has now released the sequel to the sci-fi epic. This one also had to face harsh criticism. Director Zack Snyder promises once again that the Director’s Cut will change and redeem everything.
What criticism has there been?
- Rebel Moon is essentially a recycled version of “The Seven Samurai” or “The Magnificent Seven,” which is not inherently wrong or criticized.
- Criticism includes the claim that this story is stretched over four hours without being particularly entertaining.
- The second part was supposed to feature a long-announced battle, but the first hour of the movie consists more or less only of “boring” stagnation.
- Also criticized is the way the traumatic stories of the heroes are simply summarized quickly, which prevents any emotional connection to them.
- Viewers say: Unique twists and original ideas are missing.
- On Rotten Tomatoes, the second film received only 52% positive reviews, and on Meta Critic, it ranks far down in the red zone.
What does Snyder have to say now? After the second part has performed even worse in some respects than its predecessor, the question arises as to how the sci-fi films should proceed.
However, director Zack Snyder doesn’t seem to have given up on them yet and remains, as after the first flop, optimistic. More precisely, he continues to maintain his claim: The Director’s Cut will change much and be much better than the original films.
In an interview with journalist Josh Horowitz, he claims that the two films are not the “definitive version” of his work on Rebel Moon. Instead, one must wait for his Director’s Cut to understand the true story he wants to tell with the films. He announced this after the first part and promised back then that this version would change everything.
The Director’s Cut is supposed to redeem everything for viewers
“Once you see the Director’s Cut, you’ll experience a true catharsis,” Snyder promised in his interview when the journalist spoke about the failure of the two films. He states that the Director’s Cut will, in a sense, redeem the experience viewers had with the two films.
When will the Director’s Cut be released? Zack Snyder’s version is set to be released in summer 2024 and will have a runtime of about six hours. This version is expected to include more violence and sex and, according to Snyder, be completely different from Rebel Moon 1 and 2.
How much he can deliver on what he promises, and whether a Director’s Cut can really save this story, will only be revealed in the summer.
