Most players find SBMM really bad, but in The Finals, it works just right. The matchmaking creates tension and relaxation exactly when you want it, setting it apart from all others.
What is SBMM? SBMM stands for “Skill-based matchmaking,” meaning matchmaking based on skill. When you search for a game, the system tries to assign opponents and teammates who have roughly the same skill level as you. This is intended to avoid frustration and primarily ensure fair matches.
How does SBMM work in The Finals? The special thing about The Finals is that you have a separate rating in each mode. So you can be considered a top-100 player in ranked mode but an average player in cashout mode.
In cashout mode, 3 teams compete against each other to see who collects $20,000 first wins. To get the money, teams must bring safes to a drop-off point and defend it for about a minute.
It is important to mention that it depends on you and your performance in the respective mode. If you win every game in cashout mode with plenty of kills, you will gradually face better opponents and teammates. So if you are just playing cashout mode for fun, without any ambition to win, you should stagnate at a certain level.

SBMM makes The Finals much better
The matchmaking in The Finals is well done and gives me a lot of enjoyment. In the evening, I can relax and play a few rounds in cashout mode. On the weekend, I face more challenging opponents in ranked tournaments.
Due to the different ratings per mode, I can decide for myself whether I feel like excitement or relaxation. That’s what distinguishes The Finals from other shooters and makes the game really good.
Why is The Finals currently the best shooter for relaxation? Because I can decide whether I want to experience a competitive or a casual game, I don’t feel so pressured to deliver a good performance.
The current meta doesn’t matter to my opponents and me. Yes, a “Nuke” (a poison barrel with an extra load of C4) might fly across the map, but most of the time I mainly encounter fathers in the voice chat who want to enjoy their evening. No one is playing here to become an e-sports pro.
This experience can be different for everyone, depending on how well or poorly you play in each mode. If you encounter too strong opponents in one mode, just try another mode. I mostly play alone, which can also change the experience in the game.
Isn’t it like this in other games as well? Actually, it should be this way in other games too. However, especially with the competition from Call of Duty and Fortnite, the rounds become more exhausting with each win, even in casual mode. After a while, I notice that I lose interest or only play when I have the energy to fully concentrate on the game.
The Finals, as well as Call of Duty and Fortnite, are enjoyable for me. On an evening after a stressful day, I would always choose The Finals again, because I know that fun is guaranteed here and I don’t have to play numerous rounds to get a good one.
