The last trilogy of Star Wars is a controversial topic among fans. The actors also like to express their criticism regarding the problems of the sequels. One actor recently explained what he would have done differently in the films.
Which actor is being discussed? John Boyega is known not to be a big fan of how Disney and Star Wars handled his character Finn in the sequels (Episode 7–9). Already in 2020, he criticized that his character was heavily marketed, although he was actually sidelined (Source: Moviepilot).
However, he is not the only one. Mark Hamill is also unhappy with the way Episode 8 treated Luke Skywalker.
At the end of August 2025, he spoke on the podcast Happy Sad Confused with host Josh Horowitz. During this, he explains (via YouTube) that he wanted his character to become a Jedi.
He frequently comments on Star Wars. In a panel at the recent Florida Supercon 2025, he spoke again about the sequel trilogy, even mentioning what he would have done differently.
No overpowered new characters and a video game as source material
What does John Boyega say about the things he would change? As The Popverse reports, John Boyega was asked by the audience at Florida Supercon 2025 what he would have changed if he were to remake the sequel trilogy. Boyega responds directly: You would have had a completely different thing.
In his response, he is quite honest and explains several aspects he would change. For one, he would approach Han Solo and Luke Skywalker differently. He states that he would first fulfill the story and legacy of the old characters. He talks about a good moment to handing on the baton.

He also talks about new characters. He would not make them overpowered
, meaning too strong. Boyega emphasizes that they should not just grab stuff and know what to do with it
. They should fight like the other characters in the franchise. This is reminiscent of Rey’s character, who is often criticized for being one of the most powerful Jedi of all time with very little training.
Lastly, he mentions sources he would draw from. For one, he would look at stories from the Old Republic to see how they fit into the continuity. The Old Republic was a past era in the Star Wars universe. The MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is set over 3000 years before Episode 1.
He explicitly names The Force Unleashed as a potential source of inspiration that he would have used as a producer. The game series consists of 2 parts and tells the story of Vader’s secret apprentice Starkiller.
It will take a while until the next trilogy
Would a new trilogy have been better? Boyega’s suggestions address many of the fans’ criticisms. New characters are too strong, the past is not treated respectfully, and stories that fans have wanted to be filmed for a long time are not used as guides.
The sequel trilogy has many problems, but Boyega’s suggestions only show what he would not have done. The example with Force Unleashed would likely please many fans, but it should be noted that Starkiller is also a character that could be described as overpowered
