A single developer has worked on his city-building game for 7 years, it has finally been released on Steam

“Pax Augusta” is a city-building game and resembles classics like the Caesar or Zeus series. Now the developer has released his game on Steam.

What kind of game is this? “Pax Augusta” is a city-building strategy game where you establish and develop cities during the time of the Roman Emperor Augustus. At the same time, you must take care of your reputation and slowly rise in the “Cursus Honorum”, which is the career path of offices in ancient Rome.

The gameplay is leisurely, as you build your cities on various maps and manage the supply for your population. According to the developer, there is no combat. The game strongly resembles old classics like the Caesar series or city-building games like Pharaoh and Zeus.

Who is behind it? The Swiss developer Roger Gassmann developed the entire game by himself. After seven years, he has now released his city-building game on Steam on April 17, 2025.

It’s convenient that “Pax Augusta” offers a free demo, allowing you to try the game without making a purchase. The demo includes the tutorial mission and 60 minutes of free play. Alternatively, you can currently buy the game at a starting price of around 20 euros.

How is the game received? On Steam, the game currently has too few reviews to provide a real experience. Our colleagues from GameStar gave the game a rating of 75% in their Plus test (Paywall) and write: “The Roman city-building game sets the bar pleasantly high for Anno 117.”

Criticism mainly focuses on the fact that the game doesn’t run smoothly yet and sometimes plays a bit awkwardly. This can also be observed in the comments in the Steam community: Here, some players complain about bugs and crashes in the release version.
