Goblins actually do not pose too much of a problem in Baldur’s Gate 3 – one would think. However, a player had to painfully learn what a particularly nasty specimen does to their party. A bug is likely to blame.
What happened? In Baldur’s Gate, there are recurring bugs that concern the community. Reddit user ConfidenceKBM shared a post showing a particularly precarious situation his party faced in Baldur’s Gate 3.
In Act 1, he is at the windmill and encounters a group of goblins. In combat, one of them throws a load of smoke powder at the party. Immediately, the members take damage and die. Without exception.
It should be noted that everyone in the party had full health and the goblin only needed one action to wipe them out.
The fact that a simple goblin can cause so much damage seems strange to the user on Reddit. The community also discusses under the post how this curious situation could have arisen – and they note that others have experienced similar things.
A Fatal Bug
How could this happen? The community realizes that this must be a bug. Some share that it has happened to them too. Users speculate on how it could have occurred.
It appears that the smoke powder exploded not once, but twice. The community suspects it is due to the goblins’ special ability that is bugged. It is called “Fury of the Small” and normally allows goblins to deal extra damage to enemies that are larger than they are. Specifically, 1d6 extra, and only once per fight.
Instead of adding this die, the damage in this case was doubled. What should have been 3d4+9 from the smoke powder became 6d4+18. A user speculates: “It’s clear what’s happening here: He triggers his Fury of the Small to deal an additional physical damage of 1d6… just because he throws a bomb, the damage is doubled. Very nasty and definitely a bug.”
Other users sympathize with the victim of this bug in the comments:
- “It’s already bad enough to get an AOE 3d4+9 this early in the game. I believe I remember reloading and skipping the fight because of this bug a few years ago,” writes chicagotim1.
- “I used to steal the bomb and then initiate conversation. Problem solved!” gives EeyJayVey as a tip.
- “Here I learned that one should split their party before every encounter,” says OGHighway, who has likely experienced something similar.
- Nytefox42 recommends not to let the confrontation happen at all: “It’s pretty easy to talk your way out of a fight here, but yes, it’s strangely quite difficult for the level at which you encounter it. No idea why that is…”
This seems to be a bug that has occurred for several players. Have you been affected as well? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
