In 2021, a science fiction movie, which with its time travel theme and a Marvel star could find many viewers on Amazon Prime. Since then, fans have been waiting for a sequel.
What kind of movie is it? The Tomorrow War is a science fiction film directed by Chris McKay, released in 2021. At that time, the film had already a tumultuous history behind it. Originally shot for cinema with a budget of around 200 million US dollars (about 170 million euros), the Corona pandemic intervened.
You surely remember: The cinemas were closed and at the same time the market for streaming providers like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video was booming. Finally, The Tomorrow War premiered on the latter platform on July 2, 2021, after a date for the cinema had been adhered to until the last minute.
In the lead role is Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy). He was probably one of the reasons why the movie found much appeal. Alone in the first two days, The Tomorrow War was streamed for over 1.2 billion minutes according to Screencrush. What does the film tell? Chris Pratt plays the biology teacher and former soldier Dan Forester, who lives in 2022. One day, a wormhole opens and people from the future of 2051 appear via time travel.
They approach their predecessors with an extraterrestrial problem: The Earth of the future is being attacked by aliens called “Whitespikes” who proceed as quickly as they are brutally. They resemble a bit in appearance to the Xenomorphs from Alien.
It is now up to people like Dan to save the future. For this, he has to part with his family. After embarking on the journey to 2051, things go as they must: The venture goes wrong, and Dan barely survives. How his fight against the aliens ends should not be revealed here, of course.
How good is the film? That very much depends on your expectations, but even more on your expectations. The hard facts: On Rotten Tomatoes, 208 critics rate the film with a mediocre 51%. Over 5,000 users are significantly more positive and give it 76%.
Chris Pratt as the lead actor is particularly praised, while critics complain that the film does not stay long in memory. It is classic popcorn entertainment, just at home. The film provides entertaining, action-packed entertainment, and perhaps it does not want to be more.
Fans of deep time travel stories must accept a few plot holes, but at least the successful, eerie design of the aliens compensates for the fact that not everything is coherent within the plot.
Is there a sequel? Not yet, but according to the screenwriter Zach Dean, one is in the works (via comicbook.com). When part 2 will be released and whether the film will go to theaters this time is not yet known.
