In the films of Star Wars, there are some very powerful Sith Lords. However, there are also some pretty nasty examples in the expanded universe. One of them is seemingly immortal, which is due to a certain thing.
Which Sith Lord is it? Darth Sion is a representative of the Sith order and, as such, one of the most powerful. He has even made it into our ranking of Sith Lords.
Although the character does not appear in any of the films, he does feature in the game Knights of the Old Republic II. His appearance leaves a lasting impression.
Sion’s epithet is “Lord of Pain,” and those who know his story understand where this name comes from. Even his appearance suggests that this Sith has suffered many pains. His body is covered in scars, and many of his bones have been broken multiple times.
Those who think that Darth Sion is weakened by this and would be easy to defeat in battle are mistaken. Killing him is nearly impossible.
Hatred keeps the Sith alive
Why can’t Sion be defeated? Darth Sion had the ability to hold his tortured body together with hatred. This includes injuries that would have been fatal to other beings.
Sion was unfazed by wounds. He bore them on his body but survived. He was obsessed with the will to serve his master, Darth Traya – this also helped him avoid dying. Additionally, Sion was mentally connected to another powerful Sith, Darth Nihilus.
What was Sion known for? One of Sion’s greatest deeds was certainly the massacre of the Jedi of the Old Jedi Order. Only a few members survived this battle, escaped, and fled to far-off places in the galaxy.
After that, Sion hunted down the seemingly last survivor of the order: a Jedi named Meetra Surik, who had been banished by her own people for joining the character Revan after the Mandalorian Wars.
During his hunt, Darth Sion hijacked a Republic ship, took control of it, and headed for the mines of Peragus. There, he had an encounter with the banished Jedi, but she managed to escape.
On the planet Korriban, the two met again. Surik escaped once more. It was only on the planet Malachor V that the decisive confrontation took place. Sion faced the Jedi, determined to kill her too.
However, she outsmarted him, and Sion’s physical immortality did not help him. The Jedi managed to break his will and thus exploit Sion’s great weakness. The Banished convinced Sion that his master, Darth Traya, did not see him as her most powerful student and even wanted to sacrifice him.
The realization that he was not Traya’s most important student shook Sion and shattered his will. Surik showed him what price immortality had. Sion was a being consumed by hatred. Everything that had allowed him to live so long vanished, and the Sith was defeated.
