A player sends back his monitor and receives not only a better model but also double the amount. However, the user did not truly benefit from it in the end, as the value of the monitors is between 130 and 150 euros.
A guarantee request is not unusual, as long as it is granted by the manufacturer. A user recently reported a warranty case for a broken monitor from the company iiyama according to a post on Reddit.
However, the company explained to him that they no longer had his old model in stock and instead wanted to send him a better model from the same series. But the surprise was great when he finally opened the package. The company sent him not just one, but two monitors:
Today the package arrived, and instead of one, they sent me two identical monitors.
I probably have to send one back, but every time I saw posts from people who received extra items, I thought: “Yeah sure, buddy.”
In several other responses, he also explains that he needs to report the double monitor and return it because different behavior in his country is illegal, and packages are tracked very well. From his Reddit profile, it is evident that the user lives in Belgium.
Was the operation worth it for him? Aside from the fact that he now has a monitor with faster Hertz numbers, not really. According to platforms like Idealo, the purchase price for a monitor is between 130 and 150 euros. In the end, it is even cheaper for iiyama to simply write off the double monitor rather than deal with the return. Another user benefited better, who accidentally received two OLED monitors from Amazon.
Double shipments happen often, but the extra delivered goods do not belong to you
Are double shipments unusual? No, it is frequently reported that players receive products in duplicate or at least multiple times.
Can you simply keep such multiple shipments? MeinMMO spoke with a lawyer and asked what to do if you receive too much merchandise. He explains:
Even if you would like to keep the excess shipment, you have no right to do so. In such cases, you are “enriched” in the legal sense without any legal reason. Therefore, you must assist in getting the goods back to the seller. If you remain stubborn as a customer, even criminal charges might be considered.
However, it is important that the seller or sender must take care of the excess delivered goods and that the mistake is not yours. What the seller is not allowed to do: suddenly charge fees for the excess delivered goods or expect that you buy all the hardware you received too much of. You may refuse all demands in this regard without any problems.
In some cases, however, the seller also opts not to retrieve the excess shipped goods, as the costs and effort for the return shipment exceed the actual merchandise value.
Other people exploit the return system particularly shamelessly to obtain free products: A player ordered hardware on Amazon, but his package was lost. He gets a replacement sent out, but simultaneously cancels his shipment. In the end, he has one AMD CPU and one SSD too many: A player shamelessly exploits Amazon’s service, getting 2 AMD CPUs and 2 SSDs worth around 1,000 euros for free.
