A player paid over 80,000 euros for an old video game on eBay. He stated that the game evokes nostalgic memories for him.
In one of the largest auctions for an unpackaged video game, a rare, sealed copy of Castlevania for the original NES console was recently sold on eBay for $90,100. This is approximately 81,000 euros (as of April 9, 2024).
The auction winner, Tom Curtin, is not an unknown figure in the collector scene. However, for him, the auction also has personal significance.
Player buys ancient game, evokes childhood memories
What kind of auction was it? The seller is supposedly a person selling an estate that includes old video games. The seller has already listed and sold several similar games, such as a copy of BurgerTime for the NES for over $11,000 or a copy of Trojan for nearly $7,000.
However, the latest auction for Castlevania is likely to overshadow all other offers. Some speculate that it may be the most expensive video game ever sold on eBay.
What made the auction special? Tom Curtin explained that he has a special relationship with this game and therefore had to buy it. His mother bought him the game many years ago. Curtin writes in a post (via gamesradar.com):
The search is over after 23 years. I had come to terms with the fact that I might never find this grail after years of searching. But this week, everything turned out well for a childhood friend and me, as we were able to acquire this absolute beauty. It was the first game my mother ever bought for me. I still remember the call we made to buy it. It’s an important memory, just like last week. There are still a few flights ahead of us, but this beautiful Castlevania first edition is almost home.
