A player dealt so much damage with a weapon in Elden Ring: Nightreign that his damage was no longer calculated. Behind this lies an ancient problem in computer science.
A YouTuber dealt so much damage in Elden Ring: Nightreign that he eventually lost the round. This is reported by the English-language magazine PCGamer.
The trick behind this: The passive effect of a weapon apparently has no upper limit, allowing the damage to theoretically rise to infinity. However, the programming puts a damper on that.

Which weapon is it? The Japanese YouTuber and speedrunner mintius used the “Executioner’s Sword of Marais”, a weapon that is already present in the original Elden Ring and is classified as a greatsword there. The special feature of the weapon is a passive effect called “Might of the House of Marais”: This effect increases attack power when defeating enemies and apparently has no upper limit.
The player tested the weapon on the boss Wormface (in English also Wormface). This opponent spawns smaller enemies. And these accompanying enemies also seem to count towards the kills that increase the weapon’s damage. The user explained:
I hunted Wormface mobs for about an hour with the Marais Executioner Sword to see what would happen. After defeating 725 enemies, my attack power effortlessly reached the visible damage cap of 9,999.
After defeating 727 enemies, he can no longer deal damage and is killed himself:
The last damage value I saw for the Executioner’s Sword was 63,375. After defeating the 727th enemy, I suddenly couldn’t deal any damage at all, and my character was killed.
What is the reason for this? Behind the problem lies an issue from computer science called “integer overflow”: This happens when the integer that the system counts becomes larger than the maximum value that the data type can store. This then leads to an “overflow” of the value range: Either the program crashes or there are strange bugs. In Elden Ring: Nightreign, for example, damage is no longer calculated.
