Pokémon is one of the biggest brands in the world that most people were introduced to in their childhood. To this day, the main games are more focused on cheerful and lighthearted stories in their graphics and presentation. A new game on Steam aims to be inspired by Pokémon but intends to make it much darker and creepier.
What is Voidsayer? Voidsayer is set to be the first game from the indie studio SGO Studios from Poland. The game is planned to be a turn-based role-playing game, primarily inspired by Pokémon. Instead of a colorful and shallow story, Voidsayer presents a dark twist in the genre.
Visually, the game is reminiscent of titles like Darkest Dungeon. Everything is drawn but in a dark comic style. The monsters used in battle also look like this. The designs are inspired by dark fantasy or cosmic horror, similar to the Cthulhu mythos.

What does the game offer? In the short trailer, you can already see a few of the monster designs. A type of shadow cat fights against a griffin. It gets even darker on the Kickstarter page of the game. Just like in Pokémon, you can choose a starter from 3 monsters in Voidsayer.
You can choose from a red dragon, a kind of hybrid creature between a plant and a panther, and a tentacle monster that naturally resembles Cthulhu. The game is said to contain over 100 monsters, and there will also be evolutions similar to Pokémon, which are not solely tied to levels.
The game is not supposed to have a strong focus on the story. It is more about creating an atmosphere. Voidsayer aims to primarily focus on gameplay. With various events, procedurally generated dungeons, and different traits among the same monsters, variety should be provided. The structure of the shown map resembles Slay the Spire.
Outside the dungeons, there is a town that you can upgrade with resources you find. On the Kickstarter page, you can see an example of a building that provides you with more information about your opponents when upgraded.
How did the Kickstarter go? The Kickstarter campaign has now ended. The funding goal for the game was set at €1500. They easily reached that goal. SGO Studios raised almost €7000. Players do not have to wait long anymore. There is no official release date yet, but most rewards on Kickstarter indicate December 2024 for an estimated delivery. However, this is not an official date. If you need a tip in the genre beyond Pokémon, check this out: A Pokémon alternative on Steam has kept me busy for over 200 hours
