At this year’s Game Awards 2025, Wizards of the Coast announced a new game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe that particularly delights fans of a certain class.
What kind of game has Wizards of the Coast announced? It is the game “Warlock”, the English term for the Warlock class in Dungeons & Dragons, in which this open-world action-adventure will take place. Warlock is not (as one might expect from the IP) a role-playing game that is meant to resemble the TTRPG, but rather a faster and action-packed gaming experience.
There will be no turn-based combat or dice decisions as in Baldur’s Gate 3, as Invoke Studios, the developers of Warlock, informed us. They describe their project as an “immersive single-player open-world experience.”

The trailer makes Warlock fans’ hearts race
What are the developers focusing on with Warlock? Wizards of the Coast has given Invoke a lot of freedom to develop a game that appeals to both Dungeons & Dragons fans and newcomers. The focus is on the story of the warrior and Warlock Kaatri, who gains her magic through a pact with a powerful entity. The developers emphasize that Warlocks naturally possess a high charisma to be able to enter such a pact, and this should also apply to the protagonist, who we already see in the trailer.
Instead of players creating their own Warlock or choosing their own patron, Warlock wants to focus solely on Kaatri’s story and her relationship with her mysterious entity. Which patron it is has not yet been confirmed, but fans of Dungeons & Dragons can add 1 and 1 together based on the trailer:
You can see how a curse blade is summoned, and alongside popular spells and tricks such as Eldritch Blast, shadows and flying feathers are notably emphasized – this could indicate a connection to the Raven Queen and the Shadowfell.
What is the community’s reaction? Under the trailer on YouTube, which was presented at the Game Awards, excitement is clearly evident through the announcement. In addition to the inclusion of the metal band “Tool” (which indicates good taste from the studio for many fans), people are excited about a game full of Warlock class features:
- “Can we take a short rest: The Game,” writes @TheMelonXx
- “A third game where I can use Eldritch Blast a million times next to tabletop and Baldur’s Gate 3? Sweet,” finds @dawnfyre3337
- “Divinity, Warlock – Man, we are truly blessed with RPGs,” writes @ThatDevMike, who also excited about the announcement of Larian’s latest project.
- “Two words; Eldritch BLAAAST! (Must be spoken with a gentle Southern accent for maximum effect!),” writes hidden Critical Role fan @gabthegreat01
At this year’s Game Awards, many more announcements were made, including Divinity from Larian Studios, the creators of the successful Baldur’s Gate 3.
