On Netflix, the probably best movie for Dungeons & Dragons is now available. Shortly after it was released on the platform, it has already made an impressive start.
Which movie is it about? There have been a few attempts to portray the Dungeons & Dragons universe on film. Among them is a rather unsuccessful movie from the year 2000.
However, in 2023, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released, which was well received by fans of the original. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an average critic score of 91%, with audiences rating it even higher at 93%. The film was also well received by MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann.
Now, the film has been released in this country on Netflix and quickly climbed to number 1 on the most-watched content list (via flixpatrol.com). The reason for this is simple: Honor Among Thieves is a really good adventure film.
A film that understands its source material
What makes the film so good? In Honor Among Thieves, Chris Pine, who many of you may know as Captain Kirk from Star Trek, plays a thief. Together with a band of adventurers, he undertakes a heist that brings numerous dangers.
The story itself is not particularly unique; rather, the film shines with a likable cast, which includes Pratt, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant.
Especially the “party” in the film works together wonderfully harmoniously. As viewers, you feel like you are part of it – just like in a good round of pen & paper or while playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
The film takes its source material seriously and boasts many references to the Dungeons & Dragons rule set. At the same time, it is so well integrated into the story that the film never feels cumbersome. The humor also does not fall short, just as there are some absurd moments – as if someone backstage had messed up an important dice roll.
Who is the film suitable for? If you are a fan of Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3, or similar games, you should not miss out on this fun. But fantasy fans in general should also enjoy Honor Among Thieves. It is currently enjoying great success on Netflix and is the most-watched film of the past few days. Unfortunately, it was not a success in cinemas, and Hugh Grant believes he knows the reason for that.
