Dragon’s Dogma Online was released in 2015 in Japan and never made it to the West. By 2019, the servers were shut down again. Nevertheless, this MMORPG has such a loyal fanbase here that some want to bring the dead game back. The first server is already up.
What kind of MMO is this? Dragon’s Dogma was an MMORPG for PC, PS3, and PS4 that attracted hundreds of thousands of players right at release. It took place in a parallel world to the single-player Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.
The unique feature of the MMORPG was that you could only meet other players in certain hubs. You experienced the actual areas and missions either alone or with your group.
The class system relied on the “Holy Trinity” of Tank, Healer, and DPS, who could have special abilities such as creating jump platforms. Especially tricky bosses had to be fought from their backs, for example.
More on this: Why are there actually Tanks, Healers, and DPS in MMORPGs?
The game never caught on in the West because Dragon’s Dogma Online was shut down again in December 2019 before it could be released in the West. Servers only existed in Japan and Taiwan.
YouTuber Zuhl has already shown some gameplay videos of Dragon’s Dogma Online. Here you can see his latest video:
Western fans won’t let Dragon’s Dogma rest
This is the new project: A small group of fans has now set up a private server where Dragon’s Dogma Online is running. Through the Discord channel “Wyrm Hunt”, fans can exchange ideas and join the server.
There are also guides on how to currently play the game. Because a playable version already exists, but it’s extremely rudimentary, the team explains. There are still many bugs and unfinished features. Additionally, the creators provide some hints about the server:
- the multiplayer works, but only with “minimal functionality”
- only a small team is working on the project
- there is no roadmap
- it could take years for the project to be finished
- currently, the server is more of a testbed to tinker with the “core gameplay”
- donations are not currently accepted
Some much older MMORPGs are still being played actively, and we show you 5 of them in the video:
Usually, private servers are not allowed or directly violate the terms of use, which leads to them being banned. However, since Dragon’s Dogma is no longer available, it is unlikely that anyone will complain about this.
Similarly, with the MMORPG Warhammer Online. It has been run by fans for years and even receives a major update in 2023, even though the servers were shut down back in 2013.
No one knows exactly when the new project for Dragon’s Dogma will be fully complete. However, it seems that passionate fans are behind this idea. With other games, the outlook for the year seems rather bleak:
