Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori will fill a gap in the hearts of many players, especially on Steam. And the concept seems to be well received.
What kind of game is this? Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori is a new survival game from the German studio Aesir Interactive. The game is set to release on Steam, Epic Games Store, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and even the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is expected to start Early Access on Steam in the 3rd quarter.
You play as a young Mongolian from the 13th century, acting as a courier. You must carefully plan your routes and supplies, build a bond with your horses, and face your surroundings and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, you follow a story revolving around a mystical “wind horse” and also have the ability to tame and train wild horses.
The game places great emphasis on animations, lifelike horse behavior, and realistic riding physics that have been developed with experts to hit exactly that mark. Few games highlight horses and their significance for humans and nature as much as Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori and, at the same time, promise so much gameplay content.
Because realistic horse representations in games are quite rare, many players and horse lovers turn instead to titles like Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, which impress with their high level of detail in terms of riding and animal physics. The fact that Windstorm resonates with players is reflected in the numbers as well.
In the new gameplay trailer, you can get a first impression of what to expect:
A highly anticipated horse adventure
How sought after is the game? The game enjoys a lot of attention and is currently being tracked by 13,657 users on Steam according to the website SteamDB (as of July 29, 2025, 10:15 AM). According to the developers, more than 100,000 people have also added it to their wishlist since March 2025 (via kickstarter.com).
Another clear sign of the strong interest is the successful Kickstarter campaign: Instead of the targeted 60,000 Euros, over 500,000 Euros and almost 9,000 supporters were gathered. This shows how great the interest in a game like Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori is. Additionally, the studio previously received around 1.47 million € in funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs in 2023 for development (via Gameswirtschaft).
The strong focus on realistic representation and a gameplay mix of Red Dead Redemption focusing on horse mechanics and Death Stranding through the courier journeys seems to resonate well with players.
That mixes of popular gameplay work well and can also create hits that resonate with players has been proven recently by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. MyMMO demon Cortyn shows you why this has worked so well in this case: Expedition 33 is so good because it “borrowed” almost all content
