A man falls from a height in an accident and is seriously injured. His iPhone saves his life, the rescue services explain. Otherwise, he would probably have bled to death.
California rescue services rescued a man who had fallen from a 120-meter high cliff and had been ejected from his vehicle. He was saved only because his phone had sent an accident alert to the police, the rescue services explained.

The search and rescue team of the “Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department” responded to an accident in the Angeles National Forest after receiving an iPhone accident detection alert. This is a feature of the iPhone designed to detect serious vehicle accidents.
The team was able to quickly locate the driver using the phone’s GPS tracking, according to Mike Leum, the head of the response team. When the responders arrived, they could hear the man’s voice but did not know exactly where he was. Leum stated in a press release that the person had been very lucky (via usatoday.com):
Without the timely notification from the iPhone accident detection, no one would have seen him fall over [the cliff], and who knows if he would have ever been found. He would most likely have bled to death within about an hour.
Accident detection is available on newer iPhone models
What exactly is this function? The accident detection feature is active on the iPhone 14, the 14 Pro, and various new “Apple Watch” models. Normally, the feature is turned on unless you manually disable it.
How does accident detection work? In the event of a serious car accident, the devices display this message – “It seems you have had an accident” – and call emergency services if you do not dismiss the message within 20 seconds, Apple explains on its website.
If you do not dismiss the message, the iPhone sends a notification to the emergency call center, including your last known coordinates. And this very feature most likely saved the life of the person involved in the accident.
