This was the mistake: The user actually just wanted to ensure that the surface was clean before applying stickers. So he used 91% isopropyl alcohol from the drugstore, a cleaning agent that many recommend for PC components. But with a cotton pad and a sensitive plastic front, the whole thing turned into a small disaster. A prior test on an inconspicuous spot could have prevented the damage, as even the author admits.
Isopropyl alcohol is a popular agent for cleaning electronics. However, in high concentrations, it can attack sensitive, uncoated plastic surfaces. Studies from the journal npj Materials Degradation confirm that high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol can damage sensitive plastics like acrylic. In combination with mechanical friction, such as from a cotton pad, the material becomes roughened.
What happened next with the case? After the fail, the user tried to save the case. First with soap and water, then with vinegar and even with olive oil, all without success. Only toothpaste brought visible improvement. He completely disassembled the panel to treat it properly. Using a toothbrush, he polished the affected areas under running water. The result: significantly better, but not like new.
