A student stops by his teacher’s office and discovers an RTX 4090 – one of the strongest gaming graphics cards ever. When asked what it is used for, he receives a surprising answer: office applications.
What happened? On the pcmasterrace subreddit, the user JellyfishOdd6076 shares an unusual experience. When the student enters his teacher’s office to ask a question about the exam, he immediately notices the packaging of an RTX 4090 ROG Strix. Curious, he asks about it – and according to his own account, he receives a surprising answer: the card is used by a colleague for “office tasks.” So Word and Excel – with a GPU that offers far more performance than necessary for that.
Humor and Sarcasm
How does the community react to the application area? The RTX 4090 is a flagship from NVIDIA – with 24 GB of memory, ray tracing, tensor cores, and a price well over 2,000 euros (via Geizhals). The base model was already released at the end of 2022, but was hard to get for a long time – among other reasons due to so-called scalpers, who buy up the hardware in large quantities and sell it at a higher price when availability is low (via Golem).
Normally, the RTX 4090 is used for 4K gaming, AI computations, or demanding graphics workflows. Using it only for word processing seems almost like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut – possible, but rather unusual.
Nevertheless, the community responds with plenty of sarcasm and humor to the situation. One of the most popular comments openly mocks the situation:
“Welcome to Business Basics! Today we will learn how to conduct business development with the help of a realistic business simulator called Schedule 1,” writes user rheuzi.
Another Reddit user ironically refers to the supposedly outdated status of the RTX 4090 and jokingly calls for the use of new “standards” in office life: the RTX 5090, which is “essential for having two windows open at the same time.”
Could there be a sensible reason for this case? Some users suspect that the card is actually intended for local AI applications or machine learning. It is perfectly suited for that – cheaper than professional GPUs and extremely powerful. Others believe that the teacher simply does not know much about it or does not want to explain what is really behind it.
If you are considering which graphics card really suits your needs – whether for gaming, AI projects, or office programs at the limit – the question will eventually arise: Should it be AMD or Nvidia? Editor Benedikt Schlotmann clarifies: How important is it when buying a graphics card to choose between AMD or Nvidia?
