Starfield has received a free mod that fundamentally changes the game. However, it may be that you cannot play it.
In September 2023, Bethesda released Starfield, their latest role-playing game. Player expectations were high beforehand, but bugs, mixed performance, numerous loading screens, long running times and other criticisms disappointed the first testers – although the game is also enjoyable for many gamers.
Around 1 year after release, the first major DLC for Starfield was released, and despite weak reviews on Steam, some players consider Shattered Space to be the best Bethesda DLC. Now, in 2025, a comprehensive mod for the role-playing game has been released that fundamentally changes the game, making it something that fans have always desired.
Mod turns Starfield into a Star Wars game
What kind of mod is this? The free mod is a so-called “Total Conversion Project”, in which the respective game, in this case Starfield, is fundamentally changed. Bethesda’s role-playing game serves as merely a foundation; Starfield is transformed into “Star Wars Genesis”.
In Star Wars Genesis, not only are assets from Starfield replaced with new assets in Star Wars style and repainted, but entirely new content is also added, including new weapons, armor, and planets like Tatooine and Mos Eisley, cities like Kestro City, a new main story, and faction quests. There are also new enemies.

In addition to the new content and gameplay elements, the mod also addresses various issues of the base game, fixing bugs and improving certain aspects of the base game, including loading screens.

What the community says about the mod: For some players, Star Wars Genesis fulfills a great wish. Not only because the project delivers new content for Starfield and addresses some problems of the role-playing game, but primarily because it creates an almost unparalleled Star Wars experience. One player raves on Reddit: “This is the Star Wars game I have always wanted.”

Why can’t everyone play the mod? Star Wars Genesis has 2 limiting factors: On the one hand, the mod is only available on PC and not for the console versions of Starfield. Furthermore, the Steam version is required on PC.
The other, highly limiting factor is the required hardware. Star Wars Genesis has relatively high minimum requirements. The developers recommend, for example, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060Ti with 16 GB VRAM and 32 GB of RAM. You also need to free up sufficient storage space on your hard drive, as at least 250 GB is required, with the HD overhaul even 350 GB (the installation of the base game is already included with 140 GB).
