In 2003, Valve needed important information regarding the hardware of their target audience during the development of the shooter. The developers wanted to consider the technical capabilities of their players, but there was no data available at that time.
When we realized that without these insights we risked making poor decisions, we developed an analysis tool that allowed players to report their hardware specifications to us, and integrated it into the early version of Steam.

Why are the hardware data so important? In the early 2000s, there was significantly more variety in computer hardware than today. There were large differences not only in terms of speed, but also in the fundamental approaches to rendering. Thus, outdated hardware turned out to be a bigger problem than it would be today.
