Watching a movie in the cinema can be comparatively expensive nowadays. However, a Reddit user’s post reminds us how inexpensive attending “The Lord of the Rings” in 2001 was.
As with many things in our lives, the prices for cinema tickets are getting more expensive. Depending on the cinema, adults in Germany pay between 9 and 14 euros – always somewhat depending on which days they go to the movies. With surcharges for longer films or 3D and for special seats, it can get even more expensive.
But it wasn’t always like that. As the post from a Reddit user shows, a ticket in the USA cost significantly less about 24 years ago. The user found it again after a long time and, as luck would have it, it was the ticket to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – you can find a ranking of all 9 companions on MeinMMO.

What does the post show? In the photo shared by the user fatkiddown on Reddit, the title of the film can be seen large and wide: LORDOFRING.
This abbreviation, likely due to limited space on the cinema ticket, has already sparked amused comments under the post. However, the community is more fascinated by the price of 4.50 dollars, which is about 3.80 euros.
However, it must be taken into account that 2001 was 24 years ago, and this ticket price does not directly translate to 2025 due to inflation. Nowadays, 3.80 euros would be approximately 6.30 euros.
So still quite cheap when comparing the amount to today’s ticket prices. This situation is also noted by many users on Reddit who look back enviously at past cinema times:

- “Nowadays it’s difficult to find movie tickets for less than 20 dollars,” says another user – 20 dollars correspond to about 17 euros.
- “4 dollars … Man, that’s a good price for 3 hours of fun,” laments another user who misses those times.
- “I saved my movie tickets from all three films, but they got lost in a move years ago,” says Puzzleheaded-Plan450.
- “I still remember when tickets cost 2 dollars and we only had one cinema in town,” writes PinkSpider1998.
How can you save money at the cinema? It doesn’t always have to be the expensive ticket for 10 euros or more. If you look around a little, you can easily save. For one, many cinemas have one or more days a week where tickets are cheaper. Sometimes there are also sneak previews that are cheaper, or other events that attract people to the cinema for less money.
And individual chains like UCI or Yorck cinemas offer an Unlimited Card that works like a monthly subscription and allows unlimited visits for about 20 euros. If you go to the cinema more than twice a month, such a model already pays off. Additionally, there are similar offers with Cinfinity and Cineville that apply nationwide.
