A company sends 400 employees to work from home for a single day, fires everyone via video call

A company has introduced a home office day to subsequently lay off all participating employees. The company argues that the cuts would help preserve important skills.

Home office is controversial among employees and employers, and many companies want to reintroduce office requirements. However, some employees know how to resist the office obligation with tricks, while others resign or give up against their employer.

The company Stellantis, based in Hoofddorp, Netherlands, has now used the “opportunity” of home office to lay off several hundred employees.

What exactly did the company do? The company Stellantis laid off around 400 employees working from home. Stellantis was formed by a merger of the two automotive companies Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Groupe PSA (including Opel and Peugeot).

The English-language magazine Fortune reports that employees were informed that the car manufacturer would “hold important operational meetings the next day that require special attention and participation.” The statement continued:

To ensure that everyone can participate effectively, we have decided to implement a mandatory remote work day. Employees are expected to work from home unless their supervisor instructs them otherwise.

During the home office session, participating employees were then informed that they would be laid off. Around 400 people are said to be affected.

The company comments on this: In a statement to the Wall Street Journal (Paywall), the company stated that it would offer affected employees a comprehensive severance package and transition support.

It also added that the cuts would help preserve important skills needed to implement production plans for electric vehicles.
