Old games can be really tricky. Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton also found this out when he tried some retro racing games.
You probably all know such situations: There is that one game, or that one mission, that could absolutely drive you to despair.
There are some classics, such as the “damn train” from GTA San Andreas, which you had to catch with CJ, or the little remote-controlled RC helicopter from Vice City, which just wouldn’t fly the way you thought it would. Let’s just hope that GTA 6 only brings back Vice City but leaves out the RC helicopter.
Lewis Hamilton has also been confronted with such a classic. The Formula 1 legend sat down on YouTube to engage with some racing games from his childhood, as you can see in the video here on YouTube:
Hamilton fails at the notorious “Driver” garage
What is Hamilton playing? In the video, the racer tries various retro racing games. Hamilton has considerable experience with games; he says he mainly plays Call of Duty and Fortnite today. However, he has also completed games like Gran Turismo, Mortal Kombat, Mario, Street Fighter, Crash Bandicoot, and GTA.
One of these retro games is “Driver,” which was released in 1999 for the original PlayStation. And it is exactly this game that makes Hamilton despair:
“Driver was crazy,” Hamilton recalls as he tries the game. However, in the garage intro level, he quickly realizes that he barely understands what he needs to do. After several attempts, he states, “Damn, I didn’t do well. Time is up, I can’t even get through the first level.”
Not the only one: In fact, the garage level in “Driver” is infamous for being the most difficult part of the game. For years, player voices have emphasized that they never made it through the tutorial and thus failed early in the game.
This is also discussed in the comments:
- “To be fair, the first stage in Driver is absolute madness,” said one user (via YouTube).
- “I remember my family took three days to complete it” (via YouTube).
In the video, Hamilton gives up and prefers to try other games instead. F1 2000 is also played, where Hamilton comments that he may have lost his skills from back then.
He mentions that Gran Turismo is the best game, simply because of how the cars move. There, he at least achieves second place in the race.
Do you also remember such missions from the past that simply felt impossible? Which games have driven you to the brink of despair? Let us know in the comments.
Many gamers fondly remember old games from their childhood. Arcade halls have also made a lasting impression on many gamers, even though there are now significantly fewer of them than in the past. One exception is Japan: There are still plenty of arcade halls that are impressive as well.
