What are Super Mutants? Unlike many other creatures, Super Mutants were not created by radiation or the Great War. They were once human, transformed into large, almost Orc-like beings.
This happened with the FEV
virus. If a human is exposed to the virus for an extended period, they become larger, stronger, and immune to diseases and radiation. Most people lose a part of their intelligence in the process, but their lifespan increases.
The virus was developed by the company West Tek, and the Master tried to conquer the wasteland with an army of Super Mutants in the first Fallout game (via The Gamer).
Super Mutants can carry heavy weapons like rocket launchers due to their extreme strength and can eliminate you in a matter of moments. They are usually found in groups, making combat always a significant risk. In New Vegas, you can even encounter invisible Super Mutants that sneak up on you with their immense muscles. Some Super Mutants can, however, also engage in conversation.
