“The Dark Eye” (short DSA) is the most famous and traditional German pen-and-paper role-playing game. It takes players to the continent of Aventuria, a richly detailed and coherent world that is more oriented towards European legends and medieval Europe than American high fantasy.
At its core, DSA is a game that emphasizes realism, a profound world, and character portrayal instead of making players overpowered superheroes.
The biggest and most well-known difference to D&D lies in the game mechanics and dice rolls. Instead of a single D20 roll for tests, DSA uses a 3D20 system. For a skill check (for example, climbing), you must roll under three different attribute values (such as courage, agility, and strength) with three dice.
Another fundamental difference is the world itself. While D&D offers many different worlds and settings and encourages game masters to create their own, DSA is inseparably linked to the continent of Aventuria.
This world has been continuously developed for over 40 years and is extremely detailed. From politics to religion and local customs, pretty much everything is recorded. Perfect for all players and game masters who want to dive deep into the lore of a world. This provides an incredibly rich background for adventures, which some may find too constraining.
