Great Manmare (Ponyo – The Little Adventure at Sea)
What is the film about? Ponyo is a fish princess who is drawn to land. There she meets the boy Sosuke and develops a fondness for him. She wishes to become a human, which disturbs the balance of nature.
Her father is the wizard Fujimoto. He tries to bring the fish princess back home. Ponyo’s magic causes a huge flood out of anger because she wants to stay with the humans. Once nature calms down, Ponyo can finally fulfill her deepest wish.
Ponyo’s mother is the Great Manmare. She is the sea goddess of compassion and, unlike Ponyo’s father, harbors no resentment against humans. She is a loving mother who supports Ponyo with her wish.
We would have liked to see more of Ponyo’s mother in the film. Her friendly nature and interesting character could fill an entire film focused solely on her. This way, we could see what she does all day and how she interacts with humans.
