Calcifer (Howl’s Moving Castle)
What is the film about? The young hat maker Sophie is cursed by a witch from the wasteland and transformed into an old woman. She leaves her home in search of a cure for the curse. Along the way, she encounters a castle that walks on legs and wanders around.
The owner of the castle is the magician Howl, who takes Sophie on as a housekeeper. The two develop a close relationship while a war threatens the land.
What role does the being play? Calcifer is a fire demon who lives in the castle’s fireplace. It is not clear until the end what his true identity is. The two are bound by a contract that intertwines their lives. If Calcifer dies, Howl dies too.
The fire demon is cheeky and shows multiple sides of himself. He appears more often compared to other beings in this list, but we would have liked to see more of his charming nature. After all, he has the important role of keeping the castle running.
