Reason 5: How Much Asian MMO Is in Crimson Desert?
When it comes to one of the most important aspects, Crimson Desert could hardly be further away from many Asian MMOs in general, and Black Desert in particular: the payment model. The pure single-player experience relies on a premium model with purchase price. There is neither a service structure nor additional monetization measures like an in-game shop or battle pass.
But what about other areas? Where Winds Meet impressed us last year with its extremely nested, confusing menus and numerous currencies and resources. Can we expect something similar in Crimson Desert?
We also have some concerns regarding the quality of the quests. The quasi-predecessor Black Desert primarily relies on repetitive grinding and combat challenges, as the action combat system is one of the greatest strengths of the MMORPG.
In Crimson Desert, combat also appears to be at the center of many contents, and it seems to possess a comparable quality. Moreover, several GameStar colleagues mentioned after their previews that the tasks of the main questline follow rather arbitrary logic and lack coherent structure.
It is clear that you should not expect a role-playing experience in dialogues and quests like that from Baldur’s Gate 3 – Crimson Desert is not even meant to be a full-fledged RPG. You won’t be able to choose dialogue options, nor will you make decisions that have any impact during tasks. Those hoping for that will surely be disappointed.
It is also clear that there will be no German voiceover; only subtitles and menus are translated into German. Therefore, those who do not understand or speak English well will have to read a lot. At least Asian developers often provide a fast-forward option, and Crimson Desert is likely to offer no exception.
