The Fiend

The Fiend as an Otherworldly Patron is what one would typically understand as a “pact with the devil.” The warlock establishes a pact with a fiend from the lower planes, whose goals are often evil, whether one wants to oppose them or not. They seek corruption and destruction, which can also corrupt and shatter a warlock.
The Fiend is simple yet effective – a very strong patron that allows the warlock to inflict a lot of damage while also providing defensive abilities. Many warlocks learn only a few spells that create area damage and can impact multiple targets at once. However, the Fiend offers popular options in its expanded spell list (like Burning Hands or Fireball) that fulfill this need. It is largely reliant on fire damage, which matches its infernal, devilish theme.
Examples of Otherworldly Patrons:
Demon Lords like Demogorgon or Orcus, Archdevils like Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, or Belial.
Best Features:
- Blessing of the Dark Master: Starting at level 1, when you defeat an enemy, you can restore your hit points equal to your Charisma modifier + your warlock level.
- Fate of the Dark Master: Starting at level 6, the patron can influence the fate of their warlock and once per long rest add 1D10 to a roll.
- Fiendish Resilience: Starting at level 10, you can choose a damage type after a short or long rest to gain resistance against. This lasts until you choose another type after another rest.
Many of these possible Otherworldly Patrons possess powers that come quite close to those of gods. Nevertheless, it is the pursuit of this god-like power that drives these entities to make pacts with mortals.
