Fortnite – With Battle Royale to PUBG Competitor
Until now, Epic’s building shooter Fortnite was known for fun coop action. Four players faced endless hordes of zombies, which could only be defeated with firepower and cleverly devised fortifications full of traps. Now, the game from Epic Games aims to compete with the battle royale leader PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Fortnite Faces Trouble with PUBG
The new PvP game mode for Fortnite is called simply Battle Royale. As expected, the mode is heavily inspired by genre giants like H1Z1: King of the Kill or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The similarities with the genre leader from Bluehole have even led to some media disputes.
The developers from Bluehole accuse the folks at Epic Games of copying their game PUBG. And this, despite the fact that as a user of the Unreal Engine from Epic, they are actually business partners. You can find more details about the dispute between Epic and Bluehole here.
Fortnite – Battle Royale in Color and Free to Play
But whether a copy or not, Battle Royale for Fortnite looks great with the comic graphics and brings some new ideas to the genre:
- Like in the PvE version of Fortnite, you can dismantle almost everything in the game world and gain resources from it.
- With the resources you then build fortifications, like walls that provide cover in battle, high seats for snipers or stairs to reach elevated positions.
- As in regular Fortnite, you can build and set traps to deceive unsuspecting players.
The gameplay of Battle Royale in Fortnite runs somewhat faster than the rather slow PUBG. The gunplay resembles more an arcade title than a realistic shooter. The best part of Fortnite’s PvP mode, however, is that it is free to play.
Unlike the ongoing paid base game, you don’t have to spend a cent for the PvP mode and can play on both PS4 and Xbox One. PUBG, meanwhile, is still limited to PC.
